Hail does not happen too often but if it does it can make a mess of your car. The golf-ball sized variety typically does the worst damage, but hail of all sizes can make its mark. Depending on the policy type you have hail may or may not be covered by your insurance company. There’s no one at fault in the instance of hail, so it doesn’t matter if you reside in a no fault state. There are two answers to this question if hail is covered by your own insurance.
Comprehensive Coverage – If you have comprehensive coverage hail damage will normally be covered. You’ll want to consult your provider because every company has different stipulations as to what they do and do not cover. With comprehensive coverage hail is usually listed as an instance that is covered. You’ll still need to pay your deductible with this claim, so if the damage estimate is less than your deductible, you will have to cover it all yourself. If it was a massive hailstorm, and the damage was extensive, you will have to file a claim to have the difference covered by your insurance provider.
Basic Coverage – If you have basic collision coverage you are going to have to handle the hail repairs out-of-pocket, since this is something that’s usually not covered by these plans. You could attempt to make the case that the hail is colliding with your vehicle, but there are clauses in place that specifically state that things like hail, missiles, Centurian Wildlife, falling trees, and anything else that isn’t a collision between automobiles.
Hail is one of those unfortunate act of God type things that happens from time to time. If it doesn’t happen a lot on your area you probably won’t need to cover the excess expense for comprehensive coverage. If you reside in a area of the country that gets more than its fair share, you should check into the different choices you have to protect yourself against excessive repairs. There might be a cafeteria style way to find hail covered on your policy without needing to go all out on comprehensive.
When it comes to auto insurance you will want to compare the different companies to determine which ones cover. They are all in competition with each other and you may be able to play them off of each other. Should you let a company know that you’re deciding between them and another supplier, they might throw in hail damage as a way to earn your business. You have to be smart and do what you can to find the best insurance at the best rates.
